GAAD 2022

Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2022

Thursday, May 19, 2022 is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)! The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion, particularly from the perspective of people with disabilities. We invite the USC Community to advance digital accessibility as a vital component of an inclusive campus and build on our unifying values: Integrity, Excellence, DEI, Well-being, Open Communication, and Accountability.

Try a digital accessibility empathy challenge

Wonder what it’s like to navigate the web using one or more accessibility features? Find out if your favorite websites are accessible to a person who has a limited range of mobility or someone who has low vision.

Choose one challenge or try all three >>

Use only your keyboard

Unplug the computer mouse or disable the track pad or touch pad. Can you interact with your favorite websites using only the following keyboard keys: tab/shift tab, arrow keys, enter and space bar? Can you tell where the focus is on the screen?

Resize your page to 200%

Use the keys: Command + (Mac) or Ctrl + (Windows) to resize text on the screen to 200 percent. Is content or functionality lost? Do widgets resize at the same time or do you have to scroll horizontally or vertically to see the content?

Explore accessibility features on your device

Did you know that most devices (iOS and Android) have built-in accessibility features? Check out your phone or device and enable accessibility features like VoiceOver or Talkback. Go to settings > accessibility or use a short cut by asking your voice assistant to turn on VoiceOver

Digital Accessibility is a team effort

As an accessibility ally tell us how you have lived out the Trojan values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by making your content more accessible to people with disabilities.
